Under direct supervision, the Nutrition Services Substitute performs food prep, service and kitchen cleaning duties, and does related work as required.  Decisions and determinations are based clearly on defined procedures or instructions or on well-defined rules and regulations. This person must interact in a professional manner with students, staff, and the public on a regular basis. The Nutrition Services Substitute works under the supervision of the Nutrition Services Supervisor. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Excellent communication skills: ability to communicate in a positive manner and get along with others in a high stress environment
  • Must be in good physical condition
  • Ability to lift 50lbs and stand for prolonged periods
  • Ability to read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Possess, or ability to obtain, an OR Food Handler’s Permit
  • Ability to learn and comprehend USDA record keeping concepts
  • Ability to learn and comprehend basic food preparation math and measurement concepts
  • Previous kitchen experience preferred
  • Fingerprinting and Criminal History Check at employee’s expense is Required once hired
  • Capable of performing assigned tasks given working conditions and physical effort listed below

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs food preparation duties.
  • Operates equipment found in school kitchens.
  • May serve food.
  • Performs cleaning, dish washing and other general duties in a kitchen or serving area.
  • Assists in the cleaning and storing of equipment and food supplies.
  • Assists in the process of assuring an adequate supply of food items for the preparation of future menu dishes.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of the assigned operational area(s).
  • Completes and maintains required records.
  • Fulfills other related duties as assigned.
  • Capable of performing assigned tasks given working conditions and physical effort listed below.

 

Working Conditions

 

This employee works in a kitchen/cafeteria environment.  The usual hazards associated with cooking equipment, such as hot stoves, steam cookers, and cutting devices, is continually present.  There may be frequent lifting of a variety of items ranging up to 50 pounds in weight.  Occasional climbing on a stool or ladder is required; must be able to stand for prolonged periods.  Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing, and near visual acuity/depth perception.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

Knowledge - 

  • Basic kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Rules of safety and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to learn USDA/HACCP rules and regulations for area responsibility.
  • Ability to learn rules and regulations for portion control.

 

Skills and Abilities - 

  • Operate equipment found in school kitchens.
  • Read, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Accurately transfer, record and convey information, materials, and money as required by the position.
  • Adhere to federal requirement for a drug-free and tobacco-free workplace.
  • Possess or obtain an OR Food Handler’s Permit.

 

Education and Experience

 

The position requires the basic ability to read, write, and communicate, the ability to understand directions and basic mathematical concepts, and to read measuring devices.
